One of the businesses booming (along with the medical profession and pharmaceuticals thanks to the "hepatitis C-tattoo" alliance) as a consequence of the tattoo-craze is the dermatology industry. According to the American Society of Dermatological surgery, over 50% of everyone receiving a tattoo wants it removed.

Tattoo removal via laser surgery is among the fastest growing areas of the dermatology industry.

Depending on the size of the tattoo and colors used, the laser tattoo removal surgery can be very painful and very expensive. Tattoos performed by commercial tattoo parlors are much more difficult to remove because the tattoo is deeper, the ink more complex and thicker. It normally takes between 10 and 15 laser surgery sessions to remove the average tattoo, but 25-30 sessions are not uncommon, depending on the complexity of the tattoo. When you consider the average single session costs between 0 – 0, the removal surgery can be very expensive, costing as much as ,000. That tattoo might cost 00 to remove. And may I remind you, health insurance does not cover tattoo removals – this is strictly out of the pocket expenses. And yet despite this enormous personal cost, most people are so disgusted with their tattoo they’ll literally pay any cost to have it removed.
Plastic Surgeon Tolbert S. Wilkinson, of San Antonio, Texas, who has removed tattoos warns:

"If people only realized how difficult it is to remove a tattoo, understood how costly and how painful tattoo removal is, and recognized that society as a whole still views tattoos as a stigma, maybe they would think seriously before getting one.
Laser removal costs a minimum of ,000.00 (national average) per tattoo, and takes at least 10 to 15 treatments, spread out over two or more years. Even with this treatment, the tattoo is still visible." http://www.heloise.com/tattoo.html

Tattoo author Laura Reybold, writes that ". . .an ever rising number of people are so unhappy with their tattoos that they are willing to pay anything to have them removed."

"Yet an ever rising number of people are so unhappy with their tattoos that they are willing to pay anything to have them removed. Tattoo removal laser surgery is becoming big business for the dermatologists who perform it."
(Laura Reybold, Everything you need to know about the dangers of tattooing and body piercing, p. 30)

Ronald Scutt, says in Art, Sex and Symbol that even among sailors in the Royal Naval, over 50% regretted ever getting a tattoo. And among the married it rose to over 70%

"From the statistics of the Royal Naval survey, the most significant factor to emerge was almost certainly the incidence of regrets. Out of the whole sample, more than half admitted that they wished they had never been tattooed. In the married group, the figure rose to around 70 per cent."
(Ronald Scutt, Art, Sex and Symbol, 1974, p. 179)

One article claims that as many as 80 percent of people with tattoos regret their tattoo. (www.spacecom.af.mil/hqafspc/News/News_Asp/nws_tmp.asp?storyid=02-93)

Aside from laser tattoo removal and the other types of medical tattoo removal, have any one tried to remove their tattoo themselves? I was thinking of buying a numbing topical cream and place it on the tattoo and use a scalpel to remove the tattoo. Anyone have tried this or anything thing else to remove a tattoo?
Thank you

Ok sorry this is so long but I have some questions about laser tattoo removal. I got a fairly small (about the length of a hand) 3 lined lettering tattoo in black ink on my side that was spelled incorrectly (artist’s fault, the stencil WAS correct). I’ve been to a few different tattoo shops and didn’t like any of their ideas for cover ups or fixes (koi fish, flowers, eagles, skulls, etc are the only things that will effectively cover it up was what I was told). Basically nothing can be done to fix it to my liking. So I want to get rid of my first, last, and only tattoo. I have a few questions about it:
1) I’m mixed (black and white) and have about the same skin color as Raven Symone…will the laser work properly on this skin color? I read online that the lighter the skin color, the better the results.
2) Has anyone ever had this done? Was it worth the money? Did it completely remove that tattoo? How many sessions did it take and how long before it was completely gone?

Thanks!!!
Thanks…no offense but that cream doesn’t look very effective. I would be skeptical about that….And did you get a numbing cream or injection before the procedure?

I am going to get laser tattoo removal in a few months. I have read that the lighter the skin color, the better results. I have also read that the laser picks up on darker pigments…like tattoo ink. This is probably stupid, but I’m going on a cruise right before my treatments (maybe a month and a half before) and I was wondering if a tan will mess up my results with laser tattoo removal. I have light skin…i’m not like creepy freakish pale, but I do have light skin, blonde hair and blue eyes. I really don’t want comments about how getting a tan is bad for you…I live in Florida…I’m perfectly aware of the damage and risk of tanning. I am concerned with the question at hand. Does having a tan mess up Laser tattoo removal?

Okay, Im 19, and i made one of the biggest mitakes of my life, I got a bunch of tattoos, wich includes the tops of my hands and fingers. i dont need you to tell me im dumb, because i know i am, i regret ever getting ink. I want to get laser tattoo removal, but i dont have the money, so i need to get a job but a job wont hire me cuz of my tats, what do i dooooo!? i hate having so many tattoos it ruined my life. (wrecking balm doesnt work, ive heard)

I’m 15 and I have 3 tattoos I would like to have lasered off. I got a job just to save up to get it done. I’m so sick of look at it all the time. And I didn’t really think it through when I got them about 2 years ago..

1. How much do you think it would cost to get them faded as much a possible?

2. Do I need a parent to come with me or just someone over 18?

3. Where is the closest place possible that specializes in laser tattoo removal? (i live in southern maine)

One is musical notes on my wrist, one is 3 dots (my crazy life) on my pinky, and one a just a dumb line on my ring finger from backing out from getting something else. (they are homemade and were done with india ink)

Here are some pictures:
(i know i got them in the worst places possible)

Some of you may have read my other question about "What should I do". I didn’t mention it there, but part of the reason my parents are so mad about me having tats (I’m 16) is that they are in fact very rich. My parents are trying to force me to get laser tattoo removal which i wouldn’t mind, but as someone pointed out it would cost thousands of dollars. but they have more than enough money to pay for that. if anyone read my previous post about "what should i do", please tell me if this makes a difference, and what should happen. i got these tats about a month ago, how long do i have to wait to get them lasered? and i dont mind getting them lasered so if they want me to and have the $$ then i should, right? also, should i buy one of those other in-home tattoo removal products first to see if i can remove some of the ink that way so that the laser removal doesn’t take as many sessions?

Anyone know of any good alternatives to laser tattoo removal? I’ve been looking into it and laser removal is very expensive and most often leaves a scar.

Then i was looking into "wrecking balm" but all i found were reviews that pretty much say it’s crap.

Right now.. All i can hope for is laser tattoo removal.. but it’s just too damn over priced.

I have a few tattoos that I’d like to get rid of. Two of them are 5 years old and one of them is 1 year old. The year-old tat is on my wrist and that’s the one I’m most self-conscious about since it’s always exposed and I’m fair-skinned so it stands out even though the colors aren’t sharp.

I’m saving up and researching laser tattoo removal. But in the meantime, is there any way to help fade my wrist tat so it’s not so noticeable? [Besides tanning, but something along those lines]. I’ve researched products like Wrecking Balm a little and it seems a bit shady. Does Neosporin only work as a fading agent if the tattoo is fresh?

Also, what products should I stay away from?

i’ve had a couple laser tattoo removal sessions, the black ink is pretty faded at this point. my question is if i was to have something in color done over the faded black, in a few years when the different colors start to fade, will you be able to see the original tattoo again?

My ex-husband tattooed a horrible self portrait on my arm when we were both teenagers…and I hate the damn thing! Does anyone know if there any agencies that help pay for laser tattoo removal? And has anyone ever used the cream that claims to fade tattoos? Does it work? Serious answers only, please.

I have several tattoos that I love; however, there is one from several years ago that I no longer want and I’m looking into getting laser removal done on it. I have called a few different dermatology offices and they don’t seem to know who to refer me to; what type of offices usually offer laser tattoo removal and what do they charge just for the consultation (to take a look at the tattoo and estimate cost of removal and how many visits it will take to remove tattoo completely)? This is probably a question best answered by someone who’s had tattoo removal, but any help is appreciated. Thanks!
To answer the second response, the tattoo I’m looking to remove is very large, and as a general rule, tattoo artists ask that the coverup piece be about 2-3 times larger than the original so as to draw attention away from the center where the original tattoo is located. A coverup would have to be massive for this and I don’ t want that.

I recently read that if you tattoo(not inject) saline solution into an exsisting tattoo that it will lighten it, is it true? The article said it works best with older tattoos and is way cheaper than laser tattoo removal processes (to lighten up tattoos for cover ups) Just curious if anyone has heard of it before or had it done…Thanks :)
