Has anyone had experience with surgical excision of a tattoo?
I do NOT want to know anything about laser removal. I have tried that. I am allergic to the ink in my tattoo and the laser removal causes me ALOT of problems. I have a quarter size tattoo on my ankle that I am want excised. I want to know if anyone has done this, how big was your tattoo and what kind of scar do you have?

A close friend of mine had it done in the early 90’s, before laser treatments were widely available. He regets the scar less than the tattoo, so I suppose it worked out quite well for him. His tattoo was about the two inches wide by two inches in height on his right shoulder. The scar is pretty deep to this day.
The doctor who removed the tattoo was his family physician. I don’t know if there are any doctors still willing to do something like that so you might have to find a specialist or a plastic surgeon.
If it’s the only viable method to remove the ink from your system, then you just have to do what you have to do. Good luck!
It leaves the kind of scar you’d expect – a pretty noticable one. It will likely be dark and slightly raised, at least for a good long while. If you have skin that forms keloids, you should also expect to encounter that.
But if you collaberate with a dermatologist or plastic surgeon, you can make the process as easy as possible on your body. This includes having the excision performed by a proper surgeon, and using scar treatments. You may even be able to get the visability of the scar further reduced once it’s healed with scar reduction surgery.
In the mean time, as you plan it all out, use topical antihistamines to help reduce your discomfort.
Best of luck to you!
I’ve seen a doctor do it with a small grinding wheel, it left a white patch where the tattoo was, and he was charged eighty bucks. It was about that same size. All tattoo removal techniques (including laser) involve some scarring. The laser seems to work the best. I just cover ‘em up.
